Why This Role Is Important to Us

The Food Safety Technician role ensures the highest standards of safety and hygiene across all our nursery locations, directly impacting the well-being of the children in our care. This role maintains regulatory compliance, supports our growth by ensuring new and existing sites meet safety standards, and enhances team competence through training and support.

As a Food Safety Technician, you will ensure rigorous food safety and hygiene standards across all nurseries. You will conduct thorough investigations of food safety incidents, provide targeted training and support to staff, manage severe pest infestations, liaise with local authorities, and contribute to the development and implementation of risk assessments and safety protocols.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  • Support and Training: Provide targeted support to nurseries, conduct unannounced visits, and deliver corrective training. Facilitate compliance to achieve an EHO 5 rated estate. Attend meetings and update databases with actions taken.
  • Project Management: Manage severe pest infestations and improve standards at sites with <4 National Food Hygiene Ratings.
  • Incident Investigation: Investigate allergen incidents, foreign body reports, and food poisonings. Prepare reports and apply learnings.
  • Compliance and Risk Assessments: Act as the first contact for Enforcement Officers/Local Authorities, assist managers with risk assessments, and liaise with the H&S Manager.
  • Education and Training: Conduct annual refresher sessions, deliver training, advise on safety content, train new managers and kitchen teams, and provide allergen advice.
  • Food Trading and Safety: Liaise with operations and marketing, ensure HACCP is applied, monitor risks, and provide reality checks on food development proposals.
  • Projects: Undertake additional projects as required.

Success in this role means maintaining the highest standards of food safety and hygiene, resulting in top EHO ratings and a safe environment for children. It involves managing and mitigating food safety risks, resolving incidents promptly, and ensuring compliance with regulations.  

To excel in this role, you will need:

  • Technical Skills: In-depth understanding of food safety and health and safety policies, practical knowledge of kitchen operations, and an exemplary record in EHO ratings.
  • Communication and Interpersonal Skills: Ability to communicate effectively at all levels and strong influencing skills.
  • Organisational Skills: Excellent ability to organise self and others to achieve necessary solutions.
  • Accountability: Takes responsibility for ensuring safety and compliance across all nurseries.
  • Attention to Detail: Meticulous in conducting inspections and reporting.
  • Problem-Solving: Proactively identifies issues and implements solutions.
  • Team Collaboration: Works effectively with different teams to achieve common goals.
  • Qualifications: Ideally, holder of Level 4 (Advanced) Food Safety and similar Health & Safety certificates. Full driving licence.
